How the Eagles returned to the Super Bowl in 2025

Bill Streicher-Imagn

The Philadelphia Eagles have soared back to the Super Bowl in 2025, a testament to their consistent excellence and ability to adapt in a highly competitive league. After falling short in the 2023-24 season, the Eagles made strategic moves, leaned on veteran leadership, and witnessed the emergence of young talent to cement themselves as NFC champions once again. Here's a detailed look at how the Eagles earned their spot in the biggest game of the year.

Continuity and Leadership

One of the most significant factors in the Eagles' success was their stability at key positions. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, entering his prime, continued to build on his MVP-caliber performances from previous years. Hurts' combination of leadership, decision-making, and dual-threat ability set the tone for the entire team. While his statistical performance was a bit lackluster, he played efficient, mistake-free football, only throwing five interceptions and scoring over thirty touchdowns.

Head coach Nick Sirianni and his staff also played a pivotal role. With another year in his system, the team refined their identity as a balanced yet explosive offense and a suffocating defense. Sirianni's game management and ability to make mid-game adjustments gave the Eagles an edge in tight contests, which proved crucial in both the regular season and playoffs. After a 2-2 start, the team went 12-1 over the final 13 games, and then won three straight playoff games at home.

Offensive Firepower

Philadelphia's offense was one of the league's most dynamic units. The duo of wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith tormented defenses all season. Brown’s physicality and Smith’s route-running artistry provided a perfect complement, while tight end Dallas Goedert continued to be a reliable target in clutch moments.

The offensive line, anchored by veteran Lane Johnson, remained a cornerstone of the team’s success. Despite their advancing years, they played at an elite level, protecting Hurts and paving the way for the rushing attack.

The running game, led by offseason acquisition Saquon Barkley, added another dimension to the offense. Barkley’s combination of vision, agility, and power revitalized the ground attack, helping the Eagles control the clock and wear down opponents. His 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns were critical to the team’s offensive balance.

Defensive Dominance

Defensively, the Eagles were a force to be reckoned with. The defensive line, headlined by Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, wreaked havoc on opposing offenses.

The linebacking corps, led by Zack Baun, played a key role in improving the team’s run defense, an area that had been a concern in previous seasons. Baun earned himself a nomination for Defensive Player of the Year, totaling 151 tackles and five forced fumbles.

In the secondary, Darius Slay and rookie Cooper DeJean continued to lock down opposing receivers, while safety Reed Blankenship took a significant leap forward, emerging as a reliable playmaker.

Key Adjustments and Depth

Injuries are inevitable in the NFL, and the Eagles’ ability to adapt and rely on their depth was another reason for their success. General Manager Howie Roseman’s knack for building a deep and talented roster paid dividends. When injuries struck key players like Lane Johnson and DeVonta Smith during the season, backups stepped in seamlessly, ensuring the team didn’t miss a beat.

Postseason Excellence

The Eagles entered the playoffs as the NFC’s second seed, thanks to a 14-3 regular-season record. Their postseason journey showcased their resilience and dominance.

In the Divisional Round, they faced the surging Los Angeles Rams. Philadelphia’s defense stifled Matthew Stafford in the first half, and despite a late-game surge from the Rams, the Eagles made the plays they needed to make

The NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders was a test of grit. Rookie sensation Jayden Daniels gave the Eagles’ defense all they could handle, but a pair of crucial fumble recoveries by Philadelphia turned the tide. Hurts delivered a masterful performance, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another, leading the Eagles to a 54-23 win and their second Super Bowl appearance in three years.

Looking Ahead

As the Eagles prepare for the Super Bowl, they do so with a sense of confidence and purpose. The lessons learned from their 2023 disappointment and the adjustments made in the intervening seasons have shaped them into a battle-tested team. With a blend of veteran leadership, emerging stars, and a cohesive coaching staff, Philadelphia is poised to make a strong push for another Lombardi Trophy.

The 2025 Eagles are a prime example of what it takes to succeed in the modern NFL: adaptability, depth, and a relentless drive to improve. Regardless of the Super Bowl outcome, their return to the pinnacle of the sport is a testament to the organization’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
