Chris Gutierrez is finally getting his shot. The 31-year-old UFC bantamweight is set to face former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 281 on November 12, 2022 at Madison Square Garden, which will be easily the biggest fight of his career to date.
And Chris Gutierrez has more than earned this big fight against the former UFC champ. He is riding a three-fight win streak, including a terrific spinning backfist TKO win over Danaa Batgerel which also earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.
Since his submission loss to Raoni Barcelos in the Ultimate Fighter Finale, Chris Gutierrez has gone unbeaten in seven UFC bouts, with six wins (two via stoppage) and a unanimous draw against Cody Durden
El Guapo will now go up against Edgar, who is set for his fourth fight at 135 pounds. After a split decision win over Pedro Munhoz in his bantamweight debut, Edgar has dropped his last two fights against Cory Sandhagen and Marlon Vera, both via knockout.
Now 41, Edgar is clearly no longer the elite fighter who won the UFC Lightweight title and also fought for the UFC Featherweight strap. He is just 1-4 in his last five fights and is slowing down in his old age.
Nevertheless, he is as tough and experienced as they come, and he will represent a significant step up in competition for Chris Gutierrez.
But El Guapo has proven with his recent performances that he is ready to take that step up, and a victory over a former UFC champion in Edgar would surely do wonders for his career.
