It is hard for one’s name to stand out especially if they are born into a sports family. Shedeur Sanders not only had to compete with his siblings but they were all racing to become the best at filling the shoes of Deion. How has he been so far and is he on the rise to become the next star to come out of his family? We’ll have to uncover his story first.
Growing up under the Prime Time lights
Shedeur is the fourth child of Deion Sanders and his second child to Pilar Biggers-Sanders. He was born on February 7, 2002, in Tyler, Texas. He has two siblings, Shilo and Shalomi. Since Coach Prime had a first wife in Carolyn Chambers, he also has two older half-siblings — Deiondra and Deion Jr.
Everyone in the Sanders household had an affinity for sports. After all, their dad was one of the greatest multisport athletes after having played in the NFL, MLB, and even collegiate track. Shedeur, perhaps, became the most competitive out of all of them.
He also got the most career oversight from his father. Shedeur went to Trinity Christian High School. This was also where Deion served as an offensive coordinator for a while. His father’s advice was a lot of help for him as well as his schemes for him. The young signal-caller notched 3,702 passing yards on an insane 68.5% completion rate while also delivering 43 touchdowns in his last high school playing year.
Following his father’s footsteps, literally
Shedeur had a lot of options for where to play in college. His four-star rating got the attention of programs like LSU, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, and Tennessee among others. Florida Atlantic initially got his commitment but Deion’s call to join the Jackson State football squad made him rethink his decision. He eventually chose to join his dad in representing the Tigers in the SWAC.
With Jackson State, Shedeur popped off and looked like a legitimate HBCU football legend in just his first year. He notched 3,231 passing yards alongside 30 touchdowns while only getting intercepted eight times. This got him the Jerry Rice Award and second-team All-SWAC honors.
Expectations only grew in his second year with the Tigers and he rose up to the occasion. Shedeur notched a mind-blowing 70.6% completion percentage while getting 3,732 passing yards alongside 40 touchdowns. He only got picked off six times too and it all added up to him winning the Deacon Jones Trophy. More importantly, Jackson State reached the 2022 Cricket Celebration Bowl but they fell short against the North Carolina Central Eagles with a 41-34 scoreline.
Since Coach Prime jumped ship to join the Colorado Buffaloes, Shedeur followed suit. His numbers took quite a dip after hitting the transfer portal. They only won four out of their 11 games and he only got 3,230 passing yards with a career-low 7.5-yard average per throw.
The present, future, and cashing in
As of the moment, the Buffaloes have notched four wins out of their six games. Shedeur is also on pace to have the highest completion percentage in his career as it clocks in at 72.6% entering their seventh game of the season. His passer rating is also at an all-time high and is valued at 164.4.
All of this effort is for the pursuit of getting picked as high as possible in the NFL Draft. This also netted him quite a bit of cash. He sealed deals with huge brands like Nike, Gatorade, Google, KFC, AT&T, and Beats by Dre. With a professional career still ahead of him, his net worth due to these new NIL rules is at around $3 million.
