Charles Oliveira was born and raised in the favela of Vicente de Carvalho in the town of Guarujá São Paulo, Brazil, on 17 October 1989. At seven years old, Oliveira was diagnosed with Rheumatic fever and a heart murmur. Doctors told Oliveira that his heart condition would prevent him from playing sports. His condition healed over time, and by age 12, he was competing in jiu-jitsu. Olivera learned ji-jitsu under gym trainer Roger Coelho, who provided free classes to people with low incomes.
