Lebron James is considered one of the best basketball players to ever grace the hardcourt. He has some amazing highlights of him leaping over defenders for his tomahawks monster slams during games. However, he's never entered the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Basketball fans and analysts have reacted to the move with a mix of surprise, curiosity, and skepticism. It looks like many things are preventing LeBron from being in the Slam Dunk competition.
Early Career
Before becoming one of the NBA's all-time greats, LeBron James committed himself to winning games and making a name for himself in his league. His main goal was winning a championship and the performance of his team made him too good to care much for individual notoriety, such as those accumulated in the Slam Dunk Contest.
He bears a team-first mentality, and perhaps his genuine dedication to trying to win big as a group discouraged him from really attempting one particular event such as the Slam Dunk Contest.
Injury Risks
LeBron James cannot afford to show his talents in the Slam Dunk Contest fairly, because of what injury risk he would probably suffer. LeBron also happens to be very important in his role with the Cavs and Lakers. One issue may have been wanting to preserve his health while chasing a championship with the team, which of course is understandable.
Energy Conservation
The King is one of the best athletes to exhibit longevity in NBA history. He takes meticulous care of his body and energy preservation to be this physically able. With the rather demanding landscape of the Slam Dunk contest with its strenuous training alongside all those aerial assaults, one could understand how that was possibly looked at as an energy/athleticism zapper for LeBron.
Overall, he possibly chose to not risk his body for what is generally a more intense and physically demanding event, to prolong the peak of his Hall-of-Fame career.
Rest Of All-Star Weekend
When it comes to the actual NBA All-Star game, LeBron James has been selected a lot. The Sunday game allows him to flex his versatile skill set and competitive spirit without the wear-and-tear —not to mention injury concerns— that come with competing in Slam Dunk Contests.
Perhaps, LeBron prefers to show off a variety of skills other than dunking during the All-Star Weekend activities.
Pressure
He is considered to be the best in the world and unquestionably one of its most scrutinized figures both during a game and from fans on social media as well. Given the hype that surrounds the Slam Dunk Contest and all of those who have had special showings in it over its history, Lebron may also feel as if he has something to live up to -- another reason for him not even wanting to possibly tarnish his legacy.
He may have been afraid that he was never going to be explosive enough, and such high expectations of him might have played a role in his decision not to participate.
