The Hick from French Lick was always regarded as one of the players that talked a lot of trash. He had a winning formula of talking smack while also being able to shoot from wherever that helped the Boston Celtics establish a dynasty in the mid-1980s. Despite this type of personality on the court, he has a very different way of going about life at home. There's no other perfect person to ask than Dinah Mattingly.
Larry Bird and Dinah Mattingly both met at Indiana State. She has been in the Hoosier state her whole life and no one resembled this as a person more than Bird. This is why the two clicked. While a lot of stressors were getting to the legendary shooter like his rivalry with Magic Johnson and transitioning into the NBA, she remained by his side and they went on a lot of dates to keep the bad vibes away.
By 1989, they got married in a very private ceremony. This is where Bird's desire to have a very quiet life started to surface into the public. Despite having a very loving relationship, they were not blessed with biological children. However, they did manage to find kids to take care of through adoption.
In fact, their love for youngins far exceeds just their own children. The Celtics legend always donates to the youth and made it clear that it's not for any stunt to get them into the limelight: "I don't need the publicity. I'm not doing it for the publicity. But I do care. And that's what matters most.” At one point, the family donated about $800,000 for poor kids in Indiana.
