Top Candidates to Replace Tom Thibodeau as Knicks Head Coach

The New York Knicks stunned the basketball world when they parted ways with Tom Thibodeau just days after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals their deepest playoff run in 25 years. Thibodeau’s tenure was marked by a remarkable 226-174 record over five seasons, including back-to-back 50-win campaigns and a 51-31 finish in 2024-25. Despite this success, team president Leon Rose and owner James Dolan decided a new direction was necessary to push the Knicks beyond their recent plateau and finally end the franchise’s 52-year championship drought.

Now, the Knicks face a critical offseason decision: who will lead this talented roster, featuring MVP candidate Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, to the promised land? Here’s a look at the top coaching candidates generating buzz as potential successors to Thibodeau.

1. Mike Malone

Arguably the frontrunner, Mike Malone brings a championship pedigree as the coach who led the Denver Nuggets to the 2023 NBA title. Malone’s defensive-minded approach and ability to develop young talent align well with New York’s current roster. Being a Queens native adds an emotional connection to the city and fanbase. However, Malone’s abrupt firing by Denver late in the 2024-25 season amid a power struggle with management raises questions about his fit with the Knicks’ front office. Still, his championship experience and strong reputation make him a top candidate.

2. Chauncey Billups

Former NBA Finals MVP and current head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Billups is another name linked to the Knicks. Known for his leadership and player development skills, Billups has helped Portland stabilize its roster amidst transitions. His calm demeanor and offensive acumen could complement the Knicks’ talented backcourt. However, his limited head coaching tenure and Portland’s recent struggles may temper expectations.

3. Kenny Atkinson

Atkinson, who coached the Knicks from 2016 to 2019, is often praised for laying the groundwork for the team’s recent resurgence by developing young players like RJ Barrett. His offensive schemes and player-friendly approach contrast with Thibodeau’s defensive grind style. While his previous stint ended without playoff success, his familiarity with the organization and city could make him an intriguing candidate for a second chance.

4. Adrian Griffin

Currently an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, Griffin has gained attention for his defensive coaching and ability to connect with players. As the Bucks’ defensive coordinator during their 2021 championship run, Griffin’s expertise could help the Knicks tighten their defense while fostering a positive locker room culture. Though lacking head coaching experience, his rising profile in the league makes him a dark horse candidate.

5. Jason Kidd

Jason Kidd, a former NBA coach and current assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, is also rumored to be in the Knicks’ mix. Kidd’s experience as a player and coach, combined with his ability to manage star talent, could benefit New York’s roster. However, his prior head coaching stints were met with mixed results, and his recent roles have been more supportive than leading.

What the Knicks Need

The Knicks’ decision to move on from Thibodeau reflects a desire for a fresh voice who can build on the team’s recent success but push them over the championship hurdle. As team president Leon Rose said, “Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans... Ultimately, we made the decision we feel is best for our organization moving forward.” The next coach will inherit a roster with a strong core but also flaws that require strategic adjustments and player development.

Replacing Tom Thibodeau is no small task. His impact on the Knicks was undeniable, leading them to sustained success and playoff relevance. Yet, the franchise’s hunger for a title means the new coach must bring both tactical acumen and the ability to manage high expectations in the intense New York market. Mike Malone’s championship experience and local ties position him as the leading candidate, but the Knicks’ front office will carefully weigh all options to find the perfect fit.

As the coaching search unfolds, Knicks fans hope the next hire will finally end the long championship drought and usher in a new era of sustained success in the Big Apple.
