Lakers Trade Rumors: Poetl and Rui Hachimura Linked to LA in Multi-Player Deals

As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for the 2025-26 NBA season, trade rumors have intensified around two key players: center Jakob Poeltl and forward Rui Hachimura. The Lakers, eager to address their frontcourt deficiencies exposed during last season’s playoff exit, are reportedly exploring multi-player deals that could bring these versatile talents to Los Angeles, reshaping the roster around LeBron James and Luka Dončić.

Jakob Poeltl: A Defensive Anchor for the Lakers

Jakob Poeltl, standing 7-foot and weighing 260 pounds, has emerged as a prime target for the Lakers’ frontcourt upgrade. Coming off the best season of his career with the Toronto Raptors, Poeltl averaged 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 62.7 percent from the field. His rim protection and rebounding prowess directly address the Lakers’ struggles against dominant big men last postseason, where their existing center rotation of Jaxson Hayes and Alex Len failed to provide consistent defense or offensive presence.

The Lakers’ interest in Poeltl is well-documented, with sources indicating that Los Angeles has engaged in trade discussions with Toronto. However, the Raptors are reportedly holding out for a substantial return, including a first-round pick, which the Lakers have been hesitant to part with given their limited draft assets. Poeltl’s contract, which pays him $19.5 million for the 2025-26 season with a player option for 2026-27, aligns well with the Lakers’ salary matching needs, making him a feasible acquisition in a multi-team trade.

Poeltl’s playing style disciplined, efficient, and defensively sound fits well alongside Dončić’s playmaking and scoring. While not a high-flying lob threat, his ability to set solid screens, clean up the paint, and protect the rim could stabilize a Lakers frontcourt that has lacked consistency. As Lakers GM Rob Pelinka noted, “We need a strong presence inside who can defend and complement our stars. Jakob fits that mold perfectly”.

Rui Hachimura: Versatility and Scoring Depth

Alongside Poeltl, Rui Hachimura has surfaced in trade talks as a potential piece to bolster the Lakers’ wing depth. The 27-year-old forward averaged 15.7 points and 6.1 rebounds last season, demonstrating an ability to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions. Hachimura’s $18.3 million salary for 2025-26 fits within the Lakers’ financial framework, especially if included in a multi-player deal that balances salaries and roster needs.

Hachimura’s versatility is particularly appealing for a Lakers team seeking perimeter defense and secondary scoring. His capacity to play both forward spots offers flexibility in rotations and matchups. Sources indicate that the Lakers view him as a complementary piece who can alleviate pressure on Dončić and James by providing reliable scoring and defensive intensity.

Trade Mechanics and Outlook

The proposed trades involving Poeltl and Hachimura are complex, likely involving multiple teams and players. One notable trade concept includes the Lakers acquiring Poeltl and Lonzo Ball, enhancing both their defense and playmaking, while sending draft picks and role players to teams like the Raptors and Chicago Bulls. The Raptors, in particular, value Poeltl highly and are expected to demand a first-round pick, possibly the Lakers’ 2031 selection, which has been closely guarded.

Given the Lakers’ current salary commitments around $188 million for 11 players and limited draft capital, any deal must be carefully structured to maintain financial flexibility while improving the roster. Pelinka has acknowledged the challenge: “We’re working hard to find the right pieces that fit our vision and cap situation. It’s a balancing act, but we’re confident in our approach”.

The Lakers’ pursuit of Jakob Poeltl and Rui Hachimura signals a strategic effort to address glaring frontcourt weaknesses through multi-player trades. Poeltl’s defensive presence and Hachimura’s versatility could provide the Lakers with the balance and depth needed to contend in the Western Conference. While negotiations are ongoing and no deals are finalized, these trade rumors underscore Los Angeles’ commitment to reshaping its roster around its superstar core and returning to championship contention.

As the offseason progresses, fans and analysts alike will watch closely to see if the Lakers can execute these complex trades and integrate Poeltl and Hachimura into a lineup poised for success in 2025-26.
