Expert tips for Australian betting fans ahead of the new NBA season

While NBA betting is not the most popular pastime in Australia, the number of people gambling on basketball is shooting up. While there are still a few NBA games happening here and there at the time of writing, all eyes are on the start of the 2025/2026 season, slated to start on October 21st and end in April the following year.

If you’re planning on having a flutter on the upcoming NBA season, we’ll share some tips with you. While it is still way too early to provide betting tips on how we think teams will perform, we do believe that we can share a few pieces of advice that will help to increase your chances of winning or, at the very least, reduce your losses.

Choose the right sportsbook now

Since you’ve got a bit of downtime before the season starts, it is time to start looking for somewhere to gamble. Thankfully, there are now more Australian bookmakers than ever before offering NBA betting. You might not be able to bet on lower-league basketball as it isn’t that popular in Australia, but you’ll certainly be able to find quality NBA betting sites

We suggest that you evaluate a few betting websites. It might be worth signing up for a couple of them. Signing up for more than one site can be helpful for the following reasons:

  • Betting odds: There is no such thing as a website that always has the best betting odds. Due to the ways odds are calculated, a site that has the best odds one day might have the worst odds another. If you register for multiple websites, you can always take advantage of the most profitable bets. You probably don’t need to worry about that if you’re gambling a couple of dollars at a time, but when betting hundreds of dollars on an event, choosing the best place for betting odds is vital.

  • Promotions: Some websites will have NBA promotions in the lead-up to the new season, although it is tough to predict when these promotions will run and who will run them.

  • Variety of bets: While it’s not so important if you’re gambling on the moneyline, if you’re looking to make some of the more intricate and profitable bets, then a good selection of sites is a must.

Set limits

When you approach sports betting — and this doesn’t just apply to NBA betting, but all types of betting, you need to set your limits. You need to go in with the mindset that you’re always going to lose. It doesn’t matter how surefire that bet looks, you should expect to lose. This is the hallmark of an experienced gambler.

Experienced gamblers always expect to lose. This way, they are not disappointed if it does happen. It also means that they are not gambling with cash that they can’t afford to lose.

Pretty early on in your NBA betting, you need to set yourself gambling limits. It doesn’t matter how much it is, just set yourself a limit. This is money that you have specifically set aside for gambling that if worse comes to worse, you’ll be fine with losing. This means no money that you need for rent, food or birthday presents — only money that you can spend on your hobbies.

Is it worth betting on futures now?

Probably not. While betting on ‘futures’ can be somewhat of a fun bet months before the season starts, you don’t have a good feel for how the games will shape up quite yet. Most people who bet on futures pre-season will bet based on their heart rather than statistics. Experienced gamblers will bet when the season has a few games down. While the odds are a little bit shorter, serious gamblers are always about making more informed bets.

Read past season stats

We know that past season statistics will not tell you everything about how the future season will go; however, it can provide you with a good idea about what might happen. You can review how players and teams were performing at the end of the season. Providing there are no large-scale changes, this form could continue.

Do research in the lead-up to the season

You will need to do a lot of research before you start betting if you’re betting seriously. This means statistical analysis, reading the news and reading rumors about teams. Try to surround yourself with as much information about the NBA as possible and get your information from multiple sources. Serious gamblers do this, and it makes for much better informed bets.

The best bets to place

Firstly, we suggest that you focus on just a couple of teams. It doesn’t matter what types of bets you place. It becomes a lot more difficult to gamble on numerous different teams, since you really won’t know much about them. We also suggest that you never gamble on the NBA Team that you support. If you do, you’ll be more inclined to bet from the heart than gamble based on pure facts.

We suggest that you avoid gambling on the moneyline, which is the winner or loser of the game, since this often has the least profitable odds. Point spreads and prop bets are much more profitable. They will require a little bit of research though.

Serious gamblers will also dabble in a bit of live betting as live betting will provide a way to hedge your bets if something you have gambled on doesn’t look like it will come to fruition. You might not make a profit, but you can cut your losses.

Final thoughts

With the NBA season starting in a few months, it is time to start thinking about the site you want to gamble on, and the budget you have for gambling. Don’t place any bets now though. Do some research and look for the best odds and the best bets to place. When the season is rolling, you will be better prepared to make informed bets.
