Bradley Beal Trade Watch: Are the Suns Shopping Beal to the Bucks or Other Contenders?

The Phoenix Suns find themselves at a crossroads this offseason after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, finishing 36-45 and missing the playoffs for the first time in five years despite boasting the NBA’s highest payroll. Central to the Suns’ roster conundrum is shooting guard Bradley Beal, whose future in Phoenix has become a hot topic amid trade speculation. With Beal’s hefty contract, injury history, and a rare no-trade clause, the Suns face an uphill battle to move the three-time All-Star, but recent rumors suggest the Milwaukee Bucks and other contenders could be potential landing spots.
Suns’ Frustration and Beal’s Contract Challenges
Sources close to the Suns reveal the franchise is “100%” intent on moving Beal this offseason, as reported by Arizona Sports insider John Gambadoro. The Suns’ front office reportedly asked head coaching candidates how they would handle Beal, underscoring their desire to part ways with the 31-year-old guard. Yet, Beal’s contract complicates matters significantly. He is owed over $110 million across the next two seasons and holds one of only two no-trade clauses in the NBA, alongside LeBron James. This clause grants Beal veto power over any trade, making him effectively untradable without his consent.
Beal’s on-court production this season has also failed to justify his massive salary. In 53 games, he averaged a career-low 17.0 points per game, alongside 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds, while battling injuries that limited his availability. His plus/minus rating was the worst on the team, signaling his struggles to impact games positively. The Suns’ management views Beal’s contract as a “nightmare” and is exploring all options, including a buyout though Beal would have to accept significantly less than the remaining $110 million, a scenario that seems unlikely.
The Bucks and Other Potential Suitors
Among the teams linked to Beal is the Milwaukee Bucks, who have been involved in swirling trade rumors themselves, particularly surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo. Some analysts suggest that the Bucks could emerge as a viable destination for Beal, especially if the Suns can package future first-round picks to entice Milwaukee. This move could open a pathway for Phoenix to reset by acquiring draft capital and creating roster flexibility.
The Bucks would gain a proven scorer and veteran presence, potentially complementing their core if they seek to retool around Giannis. However, the challenge remains convincing Beal to waive his no-trade clause and agree to join Milwaukee, a hurdle that has stalled previous trade discussions.
Other teams, including the Utah Jazz, have been floated as possible trade partners willing to absorb Beal’s salary in exchange for expiring contracts and draft assets. The Jazz’s recent draft lottery misfortune and rebuilding timeline could make them amenable to a salary dump if the Suns sweeten the deal sufficiently.
Beal’s Perspective and the Road Ahead
Despite the trade chatter, Beal has publicly expressed a desire to remain in Phoenix and continue competing with the current core. After a win against the San Antonio Spurs, he stated, “I love Phoenix. I love being here. I hope I can continue to be here,” highlighting his preference to stay despite the organizational uncertainty. Yet, with new ownership under Mat Ishbia and a fresh front office direction, the Suns appear determined to overhaul the roster.
If a trade or buyout cannot be agreed upon, Phoenix may be forced to keep Beal and attempt to rebuild his value, a less-than-ideal outcome given his contract and recent performance.
The Bradley Beal trade saga epitomizes the challenges the Phoenix Suns face as they seek to reshape their roster after an underwhelming season. While the Bucks and other contenders remain linked to Beal, his no-trade clause and massive contract create significant obstacles. Whether through a blockbuster trade, a buyout, or a reluctant retention, the Suns’ handling of Beal will be a defining storyline of their offseason and a critical factor in their quest to return to contention.
