All You Need To Know About Basketball: Rules, Layout And Positions

All You Need To Know About Basketball: Rules, Layout And Positions

Basketball is a simple game with a more straightforward gameplay. However, there are certain rules you must follow to play it the right way.

Basketball: Rules

Basketball is a team sport; two teams will be playing the game with five players on each team, trying to shoot a ball into the hoop placed 10 feet above the ground. This is one of the popular sports in betting sites like SwiftCasino where players around the world wager for real cash rewards. The game takes place on a rectangular floor, known as the court where you’ll find a hoop at each end. With a line on the centre (mid-court line), the court is divided into two equal halves. In the game, there is a 10 second rule where once your team receives the ball it must be moved to the opponents half within 10 seconds, if exceeded, it would fall under a violation and the defending team gets the ball. Once the ball crosses the mid-court, you will not be able to dribble the ball back or pass it to a team member who is behind the line. If such things happen, then the opponent receives the ball. The main motive of the game is to pass the ball within team mates and shoot the ball into the opponent’s hoop while stopping them from achieving their goal.

Game Points

When a team achieves their goal, they will receive two points and the ball will be passed to the opposing team. If a goal is achieved outside the three-point arc, that goal is worth 3 points. Whereas, a free throw is worth one point. If you try to shoot a goal and miss it, you will be fouled and receive 2 free throws. In case, if you were behind the three-point lines, then it will be 3 free throws. After 7 fouls, the opponent will be given an 1 and 1 opportunity, if you successfully shoot the first shot, you’ll receive the second one. After 10 fouls, the opposing team will receive 2 free throws for the following fouls committed in play.

Game Clock

The game is divided into sections with 2 halves on each level. In College Basketball, you’ll find each session twenty minutes longer. Whereas, in high school each half is divided into eight or six-minute quarters. Between each division you’ll notice a huge break. But, with quarters it will be notably short. You’ll also find a bonus game which is OT(Overtime); played when a match gets tied to decide on the winner. A five minute short session is played after a short break .

Basketball: Fouls and Violations

Instead of just focusing on snatching the ball from the opponent, there are other ways to get the ball as well. One such way is a foul or game violation.

Physical fouls: This category includes illegal physical contact, including slapping, holding, hitting, and pushing. If a player was aiming for 3 points, but couldn’t due to a foul, he will be getting three free throws to make it even. If the player already scored the three points but is still in foul, he will get an additional free throw. If the player went so lucky and got the three points as well as the scored one during a free throw, he ends up with 4 points in total.

When a player pushes or runs over an opponent an offensive foul gets committed. As a result, the ball will be passed to the opponent. Violent behaviours like hitting, kicking, and punching will result in foul, delivering free throws while the offense retains the ball.

There are certain violations too. Which includes, Traveling, Palming, Double Dribble, Held Ball, Goaltending, Backcourt Violation, and Time Restrictions.

Basketball: Player Positions

Centre

In the centre, you’ll find tall players positioned near the basket.

Offensive: The primary responsibility is to open the game and shoot the ball in the opponent's basket. They must always keep an eye on the defenders and try to block them.

Defensive: The key responsibility of the defenders is to block the offence from scoring a goal.

Forward

In the forward category are the next level tall players.

Offensive: These players play the main role in getting a free pass, handling the outside shots and rebound.

Defensive: Their prime motive is to stop the offensive team from achieving their goals.

Guard

These players are the shortest of all the members in a team.

Offensive:The guard’s key responsibilities are passing, dribbling, and setting up the defensive players in play.

Defensive: Their main role is to prevent the offensive from the hoop and stealing passes.
