Why Johnathan Abram will surprise everyone in the 2022 NF...
Johnathan Abram has always played with a massive chip on his shoulder. But looks like we’ll see an even hungrier version of him in the 2022 NFL season. The Fan Arch athlete definitely has something to prove after the Oakland Raiders announced that they won’t be picking up his fifth-year player option — making him an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
Johnathan Abram was a first-round pick by the Raiders (27th overall) back in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old safety endeared himself with the Raiders’ fanbase rather quickly for his aggressive style of play.
However, the injury bug kept cutting his season short. In his rookie year, Johnathan Abram tore his rotator cuff and labrum in the season opener. His sophomore year brought more bad luck, as he suffered a sprained shoulder and chipped collarbone.
Johnathan Abram looked like he was finally turning the corner and had played every snap through 14 games last year until a season-ending shoulder injury hampered his progress.
In three seasons, Johnathan Abram has only managed to play 28 games. It was a damn shame, too, as Johnathan Abram recorded a career-best 116 tackles, which was second on the team, along with one interception before the injury.
The Raiders spark plug even recorded a PFF grade of 56.9 — the highest of his career so far. Despite not being able to finish the season, Johnathan Abram also tied for the third-most defensive stops (33) among all safeties in the league.
Now that’s impressive. But for some reason, the Las Vegas brass no longer wants to roll the dice on Johnathan Abram, considering his injury history.
That’s understandable, but letting him walk away will be a huge mistake for the Raiders.

The Raiders, meanwhile, turn a new leaf by tapping Patrick Graham as the team’s new defensive coordinator. He’ll be working closely with Johnathan Abram in what would be a contract year for him.
Here’s what Johnathan Abram had to say about his impending free agency.
“I just show up to work every day to get better. That’s about it. Confidence comes from getting out there and getting the reps and constantly building things, not from what the media says.”
By the looks of it, Johnathan Abram simply wants to put in the work quietly work and prove why he’s one of the best players in the league at his position.
Who knows, maybe the Raiders will have a change of heart. One thing’s for sure. Johnathan Abram is an asset on the field, may it be in Las Vegas or any other NFL team.
