Swearinger Center set to make major impact on community

It has been a while since DJ Swearinger has suited up for an NFL team. The 31-year-old safety last featured in an NFL game for the New Orleans Saints back in 2020. He was signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad in December 2021 but did not make the main roster, and he has remained unattached during the 2022 season.

But DJ Swearinger has a lot of things to occupy his time during his downtime. He has his "2 Spoonz" nonprofit foundation which he formed in 2019 so that he could give back to his community.

One of 2 Spoonz's main projects was the purchase of the R.L. Stevens Center or "The Rec", a community center in DJ Swearinger's hometown of Greenwood which had closed in 2009. Spoonz bought The Rec in 2021 for $33,000 with the plan of restoring it so that the children in the community could once again have a safe place to spend their days.

It was one of DJ Swearinger's goals upon making it to the NFL to give back to his community, and he has made it a reality.

“When I got to the league, I said I want to go back home and build something that the kids can always go back to and basically have time to just be kids,” Swearinger in an interview.

Residents agree that having the community center - it will be renamed the Swearinger Center - restored and back open to the public is a welcome development for the neighborhood as it will give the kids in the area a place to go that can keep them out of the street.

The Swearinger Center will hopefully open by the summer or fall of 2023, when it can start to serve the children of Greenwood as DJ Swearinger intended.
