Chris Gutierrez had the answer to beating UFC legend Frankie Edgar: one big flying knee. El Guapo got the biggest win of his career as he sent Edgar into retirement with a knockout just two minutes into their UFC 281 bout in Madison Square Garden.
The win extends El Guapo's winning streak to four fights in a row and his unbeaten run is now at eight straight fights as he continues his steady climb up the ranks with a record of 19-3-2.
Chris Gutierrez got the call to face Edgar in the UFC great's retirement fight, which was a major opportunity for El Guapo. Not only was it the most high-profile fight of his career to date, but it was also a great shot at claiming a win over a former UFC champion.
With four losses in his last five fights - three of which coming via KO - it seemed like the time had come for the 41-year-old Edgar to call it quits.
And there would be no storybook ending for Edgar as El Guapo landed a flying knee to "The Answer's" head, knocking the former UFC lightweight champion out cold just two minutes into their fight.
While Edgar's incredible career has come to a close, Chris Gutierrez's promising career continues its upward trajectory. The win launched him up to No. 13 in the UFC bantamweight rankings, and bigger fights are surely on the horizon.
After beating Edgar, Chris Gutierrez has named another veteran ex-UFC champion – former bantamweight title-holder Dominick Cruz – as his potential next opponent. That figures to be a much tougher fight than Edgar, but another win would increase El Guapo’s profile even more and would send him closer to title contention in the bantamweight division.
