Chuck Norris, the martial artist and action film guru as well as a veteran has a pretty unique military ground.

Early Life and Enlistment
Born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Chuck Norris began his martial arts training in the all American tradition of serving in the U.S. Air Force in 1958 shortly after his high school graduation.
Norris originally thought about joining the Navy but settled on the Air Force, a career decision that would change his life forever.
Military Service
Basic Training and Stationing
After joining up, Norris did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He was then assigned to Osan Air Base, South Korea and served there for four impactful years.
While he was in South Korea, Norris has found out about him love for martial art that would open for him a lot of doors later on in this area.
Air Policeman and Discharge
Norris served in a variety of capacities including a stint as an air policeman CEE which served the military community well.
After serving in South Korea, he remained on at March Air Force Base in Riverside County, California until he was honorably discharged as an airman first class in 1962.
Martial Arts Breakthrough
Training and Achievements
During his time in the military, Norris was introduced to martial arts. Training in Tang Soo Do and Judo during his time in South Korea set him up for the martial arts additions he would gain later in his competitions.
Most notably, he holds the incredible distinction of being the very first Westerner to earn an eighth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Norris also established his own martial art style called Chun Kuk Do illustrating his passion for martial arts.
Transition to Entertainment
After the war, Norris actively pursued a career in the entertainment business, going on to appear in dozens of action films and television series, in which he became known for performing his own fight scenes.
Of course, his military background influenced his on-screen persona with the gritty, rugged types he played, which solidified his action film legend status.
Legacy and Recognition
Chuck Norris and his military achievements are widely known.
An induction into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, being presented the Veteran of the Year from the U.S. Air Force, and earning multiple black belt rankings have shaped Norris's reputation within the military and martial arts circles for good, if nothing else.
His military experience, and specifically the four years he spent serving with the US Air Force, placed him on the path to the storied career that has since unfolded.
Born in the school of hard knocks, Norris grew up as a fighter and went on to great success as a martial artist and in show business, all of which would later shape him to be the military tribute Nicolle calls him today.
Chuck Norris' legacy as arguably the greatest martial artist ever born, coupled with his illustrious acting career and decorated time as a member of the United States military have combined to serve as an inspiration for countless individuals, furthering emphasizing how much the military taught him about life.
