The Miami Marlins edged the Kansas City Royals 8-7 in a thrilling 10-inning showdown Friday night at loanDepot park, captivating fans with a dramatic comeback fueled by clutch hitting and resilience on both sides. The walk-off victory, sealed by All-Star Kyle Stowers’ two-run homer, marked Miami’s seventh walk-off win of the season, underscoring their fighting spirit in a tightly contested National League race.
The Marlins jumped out early and built a commanding 5-0 lead by the third inning. Jesús Sánchez snapped a 23-game homerless drought with a leadoff home run in the first off Royals starter Seth Lugo. Moments later, Kyle Stowers added a two-run blast, putting Miami firmly in control. Otto López contributed a key RBI double as well, helping the team display their potent offense early.
“I felt like we had the bats ready from the first pitch,” said Stowers, whose fifth multi-homer game included the decisive walk-off shot. “Getting that early lead set the tone, but we knew we couldn’t let up against a tough Royals squad.”
The Royals countered with remarkable resiliency, igniting their offense in the fourth inning. Righty John Rave unleashed his first career home run, a three-run shot that energized Kansas City and cut the Marlins’ lead to 5-4. The Royals added another run later, showcasing their depth and persistence throughout the game.
Miami’s pitching staff, however, struggled to contain the Royals during the middle innings. Starter Sandy Alcantara surrendered all four of Kansas City’s runs in the fourth inning, including the long ball by Rave, eroding the early cushion. Relief pitcher Calvin Faucher gifted the Royals a crucial solo home run in the ninth, tying the game and sending it to extras.
Despite the bullpen’s difficulties, the Marlins’ offense never wavered. Although Kansas City’s bullpen brought the game back to even, Miami responded in the bottom of the 10th with a two-out, two-run double by pinch-hitter Adam Frazier that set the stage for Stowers. He crushed a towering fastball from right-hander Carlos Estévez into the right-center stands, clinching the comeback victory and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
“It’s a great feeling to help the team like that,” Stowers remarked postgame. “That at-bat was the culmination of a hard-fought battle from start to finish.”
Miami’s victory also highlighted individual achievements. Stowers notched his 20th home run of the season, becoming the first Marlins left-handed batter to reach that milestone since Justin Bour in 2017. Additionally, he tied a club record with hits in eight consecutive at-bats, a testament to his red-hot form. The Marlins, propelled by a franchise-record 21-10 stretch since June 13, continue emerging as a formidable contender in the National League.
On the Royals side, Bobby Witt Jr.’s hitless night ended his remarkable 27-game road hitting streak, while Crusader players like Rave and Adam Frazier provided key moments. Despite the defeat, Kansas City remains competitive and will look to bounce back in upcoming series.
The Marlins’ manager, Jorge Alfaro, praised the team’s unwavering focus in high-pressure moments. “Games like these define us,” he stated. “We showed great character with our bats and fought through challenging innings.”
Looking ahead, Miami faces the Royals again Sunday with Janson Junk expected to start, while Kansas City counters with Kris Bubic in a matchup that promises to extend this burgeoning rivalry.
In a game that swung wildly back and forth, the Marlins’ blend of explosive offense and clutch hitting ultimately overcame the resilient Royals in a 10-inning thriller. Kyle Stowers’ performance highlighted by his walk-off homer will be remembered as a defining moment in Miami’s spirited run this season.
