Juwan Gary is ready to make a major leap

The 2022-23 season is a big one for Juwan Gary. The 21-year-old made the big decision to transfer from Alabama, where he spent his first two seasons playing college basketball, to Nebraska for his junior year.
Juwan Gary, a 6-foot-6, 218-pound forward, averaged 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds over 15.5 minutes per game in 29 games (16 starts) for Alabama last season.
Now two years removed from the ACL injury that saw him miss the entire 2019-20 season, Juwan Gary is ready to make a leap in his redshirt junior season, and he is off to a good start.
Juwan Gary has started the first six games of the season under new coach Fred Hoiberg and is averaging 10.2 points per game. He is also getting 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals, both of which lead the team.
Although, Juwan Gary is having a rough start shooting the ball. He is only at 37% from the field, way down from the 51% he shot last season.
But it is important to remember that he is still getting used to a new system, one which has seen his shot attempts more than double from last year (4.9 to 10.8).
Moreover, he is also being asked to shoot more 3-pointers this season (1.4 to 4.3), and while his 27% is actually an improvement over last year, he still needs a bit more time to adjust.
The positive signs are clearly there for Juwan Gary, who had back-to-back strong games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Oklahoma (16 points, 7 rebounds) while shooting above 50% from the field and hitting 3-pointers at a good clip. That is already a big leap from where he was at Alabama.
His next big leap will be to produce those types of numbers more consistently, but that may not be too far away.
