Hello my future audience. My name is Michael and I was a high school History teacher for 30 years. At this moment, I find myself filled with sadness because the Olympics has concluded. If you enjoy 24 hours of sports coverage for two weeks straight, you miss it too! Fans have their favorites, whether at the pool, on the field or on the court, but the Olympics always spark a new sport’s interest. Whether it’s Mark Spitz’s seven gold medals or Nadia Comaneci’s perfect ten, the Olympics never disappoint. Shout out to the dominance of the Dream Team, the power of Mary Lou Retton, the grace of Greg Louganis, and the speed of Carl Lewis. All of them Wheaties Box cover worthy along with many more during my lifetime.
For the 2024 Olympics, the sport of Rugby has left an indelible mark! 7 on 7 Rugby was a highlight for the host country France who showcased one of their nation’s heroes: Antoine Dupont. The opposing team knew the game was over when Mariano entered from the bullpen, and the same can be said when Dupont entered in the second half. Dupont’s power and speed energized France to defeat Fiji whose national sport IS Rugby. Dupont’s insertion set the home crowd into a frenzy, and he delivered from the first time he touched the ball. I was enthralled by his incredible effort refusing to go down. When he took the ball the length of the field for a score, memories of Magic Johnson going coast to coast in the finals vs the Celtics were evoked.
There were hundreds of Duponts in Paris. The sacrifices each athlete and their families made to get to Paris surpasses words. No matter if you brought home the gold or simply finished, the Olympians of Paris carried on a tradition of bringing the world’s athletes together in competition and peace. For a brief time, the Olympics allowed us to take a break from the incessant noise throughout our daily lives. I would like to thank all the incredible athletes who competed at the highest levels with dignity towards their fellow athletes! If the world was watching the examples these young people displayed, there would be hope for a brighter future for all humankind.
