Team USA is often a melting pot of different cultures. It very representative of the country itself because many people have long coveted to reach the American Dream. This means that many athletes who don the stars and stripes end up having mixed races. Jordan Chiles is a big example of this. What ethnicity is the Olympian and how has she remained tethered to her culture?
Jordan Chiles was born in the USA. She grew up in Tualatin, Oregon before eventually honing her talents in gymnastics. Despite being born in the country that she represents, discrimination was tough reality which her family had to face. See, Chiles is Black from his father side and has Latina ancestry due to her mother. This has led to her credibility being questioned and it even reached a point where some of her accolades were stripped away from her.
She even got real about the situation after having won medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics: “People were racially attacking me without me even really knowing. I’m young, so I only know the story because my mom told me. Security had to come and say, ‘Ma’am, she’s doing everything just like everybody else.’ I’ve gotten medals taken away from me. I’ve been told that my mom wasn’t my mom. I’ve gotten told that I wasn’t Black. I wanted to be done because I didn’t think the sport wanted me. I didn’t think people around me wanted to see a beautiful Black girl."
Chiles has since continued to prove these people wrong and had her medals speak for her instead. Hopefully, she is able to notch more acclaim in order to completely shut them up.
