The Miami Dolphins have finally found their franchise quarterback and head honcho but it looks everything could fall apart. Mike McDaniel has drawn up the proper schemes and clearly set himself apart from Brian Flores. However, the biggest and most constant headache is Tua Tagovailoa's issues with concussions.
For the third time since getting drafted by the Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion. The way it happened is way more concerning than meets the eye. Let's dive into why a lot of fans are calling for his retirement.
Tua Tagovailoa clashes with Damar Hamlin
Two of the most fragile things in the NFL collided during the Dolphins' Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. It was Damar Hamlin's chest and Tua Tagovailoa's head. The member of the Bills secondary notably died on the field before being revived and making a full recovery. However, it was not him who went down during that collision. Instead, the Dolphins signal caller was the one who could not stand up nor walk properly after being concussed.
Mike McDaniel and the rest of the Dolphins staff knew exactly what to do. They rushed toward their star with all hopes that he is okay. The head honcho even gave his quarterback a kiss on the head while they headed back to the locker room.
The Dolphins' quarterback injury history and its consequences
Concussions are no joke and everyone who saw Tagovailoa go down shared the same sentiment. Coach McDaniel even hinted at the possibility of him accepting his quarterback's possible retirement.
“I know the facts are that it’s important that he gets healthy day by day and in that, the actual, the best thing I can do is not try to assess what this even means from a football standpoint,” McDaniel said. “I have to put his health as the primary," the head honcho said.
This is the fourth time that Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in his life. A lot of medical research have proven that the repeated trauma of the head can cause either swelling or permanent brain damage. Either of those don't look great for anyone who wants to have a life after football.
Should he retire?
From a football perspective, Tagovailoa still has a lot to accomplish. A Super Bowl along with an NFL Most Valuable Player nod is all he needs to complete the accolades for a Hall of Fame career. However, there is not much value to being a Hall of Famer if one would not be able to enjoy their life. After all, he already has a College Football Playoff National Championship and a Pro Bowl selection.
