Josh Rosen, a quarterback phenom who was born February 10th, 1997 in Manhattan Beach, went from the chosen one to out of the NFL. in just 3 years. However, it has been a roller-coaster ride in professional football for the former prised prospect where his promise just never came to be.
The College Phenom
It all started with Rosen becoming one of the most highly sought-after high school recruits in the country, earning his way there by being a standout quarterback at that level. He pledged to commit to UCLA and it appeared as though he had a bright future ahead in the sport. During his college career, he displayed impressive accuracy, arm strength, and football IQ. After injuring his shoulder in game two of Rosen's sophomore year, he followed up by breaking UCLA's single-season passing records in his junior season with an epic comeback victory against Texas A&M.
The NFL Dream and Setbacks
Drafted 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL Draft, Rosen had a lot of expectations placed upon himself. His rookie campaign was unfortunately riddled with misery, as the Cardinals mustered only three wins.
He failed to perform as expected, leading to questions about his suitability in the NFL. After an underwhelming rookie season, the Cardinals selected Kyler Murray as their new franchise quarterback first overall in 2019, and Rosen was subsequently traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a second-round pick. But he could not reproduce his early success in Miami and was released after a relatively quick stint, derailing his career.
Even after Rosen was cut, he insisted on pursuing a career as the game boy by signing to the Tampa Bay practice squad before landing with the Atlanta Falcons as a backup quarterback for hanging his cleats up.
The Downfall and Reflection
Rosen faced his share of troubles in the NFL due to several factors, including his inability to make plays outside the pocket (a trait that is becoming more prized than ever). Although his style was very good in college, it did not necessarily fit as well at the pro level.
Lessons Learned
His case serves as a reminder for young quarterbacks hoping to make their way into the NFL and to be able to go with the flow when things get hard and persevere in tough environments. Though his professional career has been a tough ride, it is never too late to remember that life can be funny. The history of the league is littered with many quarterbacks who fumbled early and then turned it around near the back end, recording both individual success and team successes to go along with their faltering early years.
