When someone calls you Mr. Perfect, that puts a lot of pressure and pride to how you move. Roberto Aguayo was dubbed the same nickname because of his talent as a football player, from Florida State University to the professional world of NFL in Tapa Bay Buccaneers.
College and Draft
Aguayo's road to the NFL started while in college at Florida State University, where he became one of those rare kickers who was a standout. He went on to have an excellent career which helped him being drafted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round and 59th overall during the NFL Draft of 2016.
NFL Career
Aguayo was a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, yet lasted just one NFL season. He played only 16 games in his career, making good on 22 of just 31 attempts (71.0%). His 32 made extra points (out of 34 attempts) gave him an impressive extra-point percentage of 94.1%.
Performance and Legacy
While he earned praise for his accuracy as a kicker, Aguayo struggled during his NFL career with missed field goals and extra points. He failed to live up to the high bar that had preceded him, and his NFL time predictably fizzled out.
Post-NFL Career
Although his time in the NFL was not as successful, his story of journey-making is undoubtedly ideal for anyone who has aspirations of playing a professional sport.
Life After Football
While Aguayo's NFL career might be over, his legacy may still very well live on through the game in addition to what he learned from things both positive and negative. If it's through coaching, mentorship or some other avenue his legacy as a retired NFL kicker still remains and is often used to inspire others facing the life of athletic ups and downs.
Roberto Aguayo's draft experience is a cautionary tale of how tough and unpredictable it can be for athletes to achieve their goals. Even if his NFL career was short-lived, what he did for the sport and what others learned from his actions is a big part of how they remember him now. His post-NFL journey now exemplifies the resilience required to succeed and the lasting power of those who dream at a professional sports level.
