Knicks Lock Up Mikal Bridges in $150M Extension

The New York Knicks have secured a key piece of their core by locking in forward Mikal Bridges on a four-year, $150 million contract extension, as confirmed by multiple reliable sources including ESPN and The Athletic. This deal, agreed upon in late July 2025, ensures Bridges remains a foundational player for the Knicks as they continue their ascent as an Eastern Conference contender.

Bridges, 28, joined the Knicks last offseason in a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets that sent five first-round picks, a second-rounder, and Bojan Bogdanović to Brooklyn. The move was initially seen as a steep price, but Bridges’ versatility and consistency quickly justified New York’s confidence. In his first season with the Knicks, he averaged 17.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while cementing his reputation as one of the league’s premier 3-and-D wings. Known for elite defense, improved playmaking, and reliable health—Bridges notably has never missed a game during his NBA career he plays a crucial role both offensively and defensively for the Knicks.

The contract, which pays $150 million over four years with a player option for the 2029-30 season, comes in slightly below the maximum Bridges could have commanded on the open market. He reportedly took around $6 million less than the highest possible extension to help the Knicks maintain financial flexibility in the era of NBA’s second luxury tax apron. This strategic sacrifice mirrors the approach of fellow Villanova alum and Knicks teammate Jalen Brunson, who also signed a team-friendly extension to stabilize the roster. Knicks General Manager Rich Cho remarked, “Mikal’s decision to prioritize the team’s success while securing his future underscores the culture we are building here. He is central to our ambitions moving forward.”

The timing of the extension is significant. Bridges begins the 2025-26 season under his current contract worth $24.9 million, with the new deal kicking in for the subsequent seasons. By locking him up early, the Knicks avoid risking free agency battles, particularly as the market for elite wings remains competitive. Moreover, signing now allows the Knicks to manage their salary cap carefully while preserving trade flexibility Bridges is trade-eligible six months after signing, enabling the team to pivot if necessary, especially as rumors swirl about potential future moves involving stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Head Coach Juwan Howard, who recently took over the helm from Tom Thibodeau, expressed enthusiasm about what Bridges means for the team’s trajectory: “Mikal is the perfect example of the kind of player and professional we want representing New York relentless defender, smart on offense, and a team-first mindset. This extension helps us build a championship-level core.”

Statistically, Bridges has demonstrated consistent growth. Beyond scoring, he contributes with 1.3 steals per game, excels in defensive win shares, and brings leadership that elevates his teammates’ play. The contract guarantees his presence on a Knicks team that reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season for the first time in 25 years, signaling the organization’s firm commitment to contending.

In summary, the Knicks’ $150 million extension for Mikal Bridges is a calculated and mutually beneficial agreement. Bridges gains long-term financial security while reinforcing his integral role within a team primed to challenge for an NBA title. For New York, locking down a versatile two-way star while managing cap space solidifies their standing as a top contender in the East and sets the stage for sustained success.
