Curt Schilling is the former Major League Baseball pitcher who had a terrific career in MLB and earned quite a reputation as being fearless on the bump. In 2009, with a reported wealth of about $50 million from his first retirement the same year, Schilling hoped to translate that success into business, particularly in computer gaming. He had a passion for gaming and wanted to create something special, so in 2006, he founded Green Monster Games, which was later rebranded as 38 Studios after his baseball jersey number.

38 Studios was created to develop a broad range of artistic expression in all forms, first and foremost as video games. Schilling wanted to develop a one-of-a-kind fantasy world, and he worked with the notable author of all things magic, R.A. Salvatore, and comic book artist Todd McFarlane (Spawn). The studio's most ambitious project was ultimately Project Copernicus, a full-fledged multiplayer online role-playing game aimed to compete against powerhouses like World of Warcraft. Schilling imagined a multimedia franchise as big as an epic saga like The Lord of the Rings, including more than just video games.

The $50 Million Gamble

In a ballsy move that demonstrated his loyalty to 38 Studios, Schilling put every penny of his savings, around $50 million at the time, into it. Several things led to this decision:

Love of the Game: Schilling, a dedicated lifetime gamer, owed his desire to create something transformative in gaming based on how long he had been engrossed with video games.

Celebrity Influence: His fame as a former baseball player attracted talent and investors, who created an instant buzz about his studio.

Big Hopes: Schilling intended for 38 Studios to become a major player in the game industry and thought that with enough money, time, and talent, the studio could produce hit games and make serious money.

Afterward, although the spark of something new was there, and a great team came together to work on it, reality hit, which is game development costs. The cost of designing and, more importantly, hosting a full MMO was extraordinary at the time; eventually, it became too expensive to find anyone else willing to pay. Schilling had double previous obligations to the venture, which would prove a blessing, and then, when revenues were due from what he believed was never going to happen, an equally heavy bane.

The Collapse of 38 Studios

The story of 38 Studios' demise was filled with missteps and trials, leading to layoff notices in May and its eventual bankruptcy filing in June 2012.

By far, Schilling was the biggest investor in 38 Studios, and the company faced significant financial troubles. Thanks in part to a $75 million loan awarded by the state of Rhode Island as part of an effort to keep its operations and development work within that state. But with the money burning and no successful products in sight, it was obvious that the financial model just didn't make any sense. When 38 Studios shut down, it was left with $150 million worth of outstanding liabilities against just $22 million in assets.

Management Issues

The 38 Studios management structure also underwent its share of scrutiny. The problem was not Schilling himself, who had genuine passion and drive to make his vision happen; the issue came from a gross inexperience working within one of the hardest industries on Earth. The rapid growth of the studio, which had just shy of 400 employees, stretched resources thin and fostered a culture of reach often exceeded with spotty planning. The lack of any visible and actionable strategy for game development worsened the situation.

However, the failure of 38 Studios had a fallout beyond the industry itself. The political fallout in Rhode Island, 38 Studios' nearly a decade of receding struggles, also included political fallout. As the company struggled financially, the relationship between Schilling and Rhode Island's top politicians Soured. Then Governor Lincoln Chafee called the 38 investment "The worst investment ever made" in the state's history. In the wake of the failure, Schilling's reputation was damaged to such an extent it made it unlikely he'd be able to roll those dice again under the same circumstances. In addition to the upstream fallout of the 38 investment, there were also downstream consequences.

Schilling's Personal and Professional Integrity

Curt Schilling's reputation has been muddied since 38 Studios rose in flames. Previously, he was revered as a pioneer in baseball; now, his name has become synonymous with the failure on Indiana Avenue. Schilling lost his monetary investment and ended up being publicly chastised for managerial decisions. After the bankruptcy, he turned to sports analyst and political commentator work, attempting a career in redemption for some years.

Lasting Lessons

Diversification: Curt put all his eggs in one basket and did not survive the Schilling syndrome. He put everything in a single shoe, which brought him to financial ruin.

Sustainable Growth: If you do not build on stable ground, expanding too fast might be your downfall. This requires companies to walk the fine line between their inherent ambition and balanced planning and resource management.

For those willing to invest as much as $50 million of their own money, Curt Schilling's 38 Studios debacle is a not-so-shining example of the risks every entrepreneur takes. The collapse of his studio affected not just Schilling but also had long-term ramifications for the industry and the state of Rhode Island, a potent reminder that success in this business requires proper planning, finances, and market understanding.
