We got ourselves another high-profile boxing match over the weekend as former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. welcomed UFC icon Anderson Silva back in the ring.

Let’s take break from the Paul brothers for a while. Chances are you missed this fight. I mean, there’s not much build up to it. No over-the-top promos, no cringe-worthy trash talk. Just two former champions of their own sport agreeing to punch each other silly for eight rounds.

If you missed the fight, you missed one quality boxing match.

The Spider, of course, is one of the best strikers in all of combat sports. While Muay Thai and kick boxing is no doubt the Brazilian’s bread-and-butter, he’s a pretty good with his hands as well.

Silva displayed no ring rust whatsoever after almost 10 years since his last boxing bout.

The 46-year-old former MMA champion proved he still has his lighting fast reflexes, as he stayed active on the outside and countered Chavez’s attacks.

With movement, timing, and distance, Silva was able to land crisp shots while evading damage at the same time. Silva pretty much dictated the tone of the entire fight and was the clear winner after eight rounds.

Surprisingly, the judges almost messed this one up, as it was determined a split decision win for the MMA superstar.

“I feel so happy,” Silva said post-match (via MMA Fighting).  “I need to say thank you cause my coach worked with me a lot. I need to this because I love fighting and boxing is my dream for many, many years and I need to prove my respect for boxing. I can’t come in here and not do my best.”

Chavez, meanwhile, is no slouch either making Silva’s upset even more impressive. The son of the great Julio Chavez Cesar had 52 wins in his professional career with 34 of those coming by knockouts.

It remains unclear if Silva would take more boxing fights in the future, but he definitely should. After all, the long-time UFC Middleweight champion already said he is done with MMA.

He clearly has a lot of fight left in him. Who do you want to see Silva fight in the ring next?
