Why Craig Sword deserves another shot at an NBA roster
After years of trying to make it to the big leagues, Craig Sword finally got his chance. It couldn’t have happened to a much better guy. Craig Sword’s NBA tenure might have been short, but it was certainly sweet. For sure, the doors aren’t closed yet. Craig Sword will once again work his butt off to reach those heights once more.
The 28-year-old shooting guard overcame a lot of adversities throughout his basketball career. But again and again, his years of hard work, faith, and perseverance allowed him to overcome those challenges.
Craig Sword endured multiple back surgeries in college and was on the verge of quitting several times. Despite dealing with the injury bug, Craig Sword still managed to average 12.1 points per game in 123 appearances for Mississippi State.

However, the Fan Arch athlete’s injury history scared teams off in the 2016 NBA Draft, and was left undrafted. Not to be deterred, Craig Sword took his act overseas and earned some valuable experience playing for Wilki Morse Szczecin of the Polish Basketball League. He also had two separate stints in Mexico.
He also bounced around in the G-League playing for Erie Bayhawks and the Grand Rapids Drive and even had a minor league stint at The Basketball League. Craig Sword kept grinding and soon found a home with the Washington Wizards affiliate, Capital City Go-Go.
The 6-foot-3 combo guard notched 6.4 points and 3.6 assists on 59.9 percent field goal shooting for Capital City in 14 games. Craig Sword also improved leaps and bounds as a scrappy wing defender, recording 1.7 steals per game.
His big break finally came in 2021, when the Wizards badly needed healthy reinforcements and gave Craig Sword a 10-day hardship contract.
"It was beautiful. [My family] cried, I didn’t. It was a magic moment. I wouldn’t trade that for nothing. It was a great feeling," Craig Sword recalled the moment he got the call from Wizards' GM Tommy Sheppard himself.
Craig Sword appeared in four official games and even managed to score six points on 3-for-4 shooting, along with three steals in a game versus the Miami Heat.
