Ellis Merriweather is not a name one would immediately associate with the top running backs in college football, along with the likes of Michigan's Blake Corum and Texas' Bijan Robinson.

But what many people may not know is that the Massachusetts Minutemen running back may very well be one of, if not the most underrated running back in the nation.

Ellis Merriweather showed just how underrated he was during his breakout season in 2021 when he ran for 1,138 yards on 5.2 yards per carry. He also added 22 catches for 165 yards and had six touchdowns overall. He was one of the few bright lights for a Minutemen team that finished a mere 1-11.

This season, the first under new head coach Don Brown, has similarly been a struggle for UMass as they’ve gone just 1-7 through seven games.

And with the switch in both coach and quarterback (Gino Campiotti), Ellis Merriweather has seen his role somewhat reduced role in his senior season. Campiotti, who is more of a threat with his legs than his arm, has become the team’s leading rusher with 380 yards in 93 attempts and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Ellis Merriweather has had just 89 rushing attempts through six games for 306 yards and one touchdown. His catches have also plummeted to just two.

But things might finally be changing for Ellis Merriweather. With Brady Olson starting in place of Campiotti at QB against New Mexico State, the UMass RB returned to his role as the feature back and had a season-high 84 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Most other running backs would have sulked and checked out amid his lack of touches. But Ellis Merriweather just stays ready to be called upon and delivers. UMass may very well call on him during the last few games of the season, and he can once again show just what an underrated running back he is.
