Clay Guida still has a ton of fight left in him
Mixed martial arts is truly a young man’s sport. MMA’s unforgiving and brutal nature makes it hard for fighters to have long professional careers.
Only a select few select OGs of the sport continue to fight as they age, while some still do at a high level.
While Clay Guida has never managed to experience becoming a UFC champion throughout his illustrious, he’s no doubt one of the most beloved figures of the promotion. The Carpenter, after all, brings chaotic and frenetic energy whenever he steps inside the octagon.
Now 39 years old with 46 professional bouts under his belt, Guida is still the same wild he’s always been.
While a final title run is highly unlikely for him, no doubt he still has a lot of fight left in him back in the UFC’s lightweight division. Fans certainly don’t mind seeing this rugged veteran continue to throw it down.
The feverish intensity, the caveman-like hair, and of course, the non-stop action on the feet and the ground. Guida brings all of these to the table each fight.
Much like other fighters his age, retirement talked loomed after a tough stretch where he dropped three of his last four bouts. The deviant, Guida, however, continued to do what he does best. Fight. Scrap. Grind.
Facing fellow veteran Michael Johnson earlier this year, Guida proved he still has what it takes to get his hand raised. The former Strikeforce Lightweight champ dispatched Johnson with a hard-earned unanimous decision win.
He wants to keep that momentum going, as he faces Mark O. Madsen in less than a week at UFC on ESPN 29. He’ll have his work cut out for him since his opponent is a powerhouse wrestling specialist who’s never tasted defeat.
If Guida somehow manages to stop that hype train, then maybe one final title run is not out of the question after all. Win or lose, we know Guida always brings it.
