What happened to John Starks?

John Starks, an American former professional basketball player, had quite a remarkable journey throughout his career, facing various challenges and achieving significant milestones.

From his early years to his retirement, John Starks' life and career have been filled with interesting twists and turns.

Early Life and College Career

John Starks was born on August 10, 1965, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Central High School in Tulsa, where he played basketball for only one year.

After high school, he enrolled at Rogers State College in 1984 but faced a setback when he was expelled for stealing another student's stereo equipment.

Despite this, he continued his basketball journey, eventually landing at Oklahoma State University to finish his collegiate career.

NBA Career

Golden State Warriors

Undrafted in the 1988 NBA draft, Starks signed with the Golden State Warriors in September 1988. However, due to limited playing time and the presence of another talented shooting guard, Mitch Richmond, Starks' opportunities were restricted during his time with the Warriors.

New York Knicks

In 1990, Starks tried out for the New York Knicks and eventually secured a spot on the team. He became a key player for the Knicks, playing eight seasons with them from 1990 to 1998.

Starks made a name for himself as a tough and physical player, embodying the Knicks' style of play during that era.

Notably, he executed one of the most famous plays in Knicks history, known simply as "The Dunk," during the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals.

Later Career

After his tenure with the Knicks, Starks played for the Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, and Utah Jazz before failing to make an NBA team in 2002 and retiring with 10,829 career points.

Career Achievements

Throughout his NBA career, Starks achieved several notable accolades, including being named an NBA All-Star in 1994 and receiving the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 1997. He was also recognized for his defensive prowess, earning a spot on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1993.

Life After Retirement

Following his retirement, Starks continued to be involved in the world of basketball. He worked for the Knicks as an alumnus and fan development official, as well as a pre-and-post-game analyst on MSG Network's home Knicks game coverage.

He also served as the head coach of the Westchester Wildfire during the 2003 United States Basketball League season.

Starks also ventured into the business world, owning a Kia dealership, John Starks Kia, in Jamaica, NY.

He, he became a part-owner and promoter for the Ektio basketball shoe, designed to reduce ankle injuries, showcasing his continued dedication to the sport and its players' well-being.

Other Involvements

Starks has been actively involved in community outreach efforts and has dedicated his time to various charitable causes.

He established the John Starks Foundation, which focuses on giving back to the community and supporting meaningful initiatives.

John Starks' journey from a challenging start to becoming a celebrated figure in the world of basketball is a testament to his resilience, determination, and passion for the sport.
